Recycled Plastic

300 million tons of plastic is produced globally each year. Less than 10% of it is recycled. 14 billion (14,000,000,000) bags are used in the U.S. alone each year. When tied together these bags could be wrapped around the world 26,000 times. Plastic needs about 450 years just to start decomposing. Then, it takes another 50-80 years to decompose completely. That means that every single produced piece of plastic has not decomposed yet. Plastics make up more than 12% of the municipal solid waste stream, a dramatic increase from 1960, when plastics were less than 1% of the waste stream. 40% of the total house plastic waste of the average American family is due to the use of plastic bottles. It is estimated that 10% of the world’s plastic waste finds its way into the sea and most of it ends up in the Pacific Ocean. There is a huge plastic waste dump site in the Pacific Ocean that is twice the size of the continental U.S. This mass of plastic is slowly being broken down into a plastic dust that marine wildlife mistake for food. Small fish consume tiny bits of plastic as if they were normal plankton. Those fish are then consumed by larger species and the plastic contamination moves up the food chain. Important strides are being made to mass produce enzymes from fungus which will decompose oil based plastic.
